Windows Snipping Tool

Among many useful tools Windows Vista features is also a screen-capturing utility called Snipping Tool. For my screen-capturing purposes I used to use Gadwin PrintScreen utility, Jing and Evernote until I discovered similar tool implemented right into the Vista itself. What Snipping Tool does is to take pictures of your desktop, offering you to take full screen pictures as well as rectangular pictures. If taking pictures of your computer’s desktop is not enough you might want to use built-in pen to add some handwriting like arrows, text or personal signature and send clip by email directly from tool’s interface. Quite a nice, minimalistic and light-weight program that does the job perfectly.
Finding Snipping Tool in Vista is as easy as pressing Start button and entering snipping tool in search field

For “old school” WinXP-users there is the excellent Winsnap FREE version:
It can even let you select any size on your double-wide extended desktop!

The Winsnap 2.x versions are NOT FREE,but the free one has all I need,
except making notes on the screenshot…
(there is a FREE utility that does just/only that, but I’ve lost the link :( )

This is a Vista Ultimate tool only.

All us Basic and Home Premium users will just have to stick with good ol’ “print scrn”,

  3. Thomas says:

@Fire G: You are wrong. I am running Vista Home premium and I have Snipping tool. Otherwise I would not be writing about it.

Fire G. is right. I used to have business and my friend has home premium and we both had it. I’d recently upgraded to ultimate and it was still there. I think it’
s excellent and the only thing i wish for it is if it could make higher quality images because it gets very blurred when you zoom into something. But its awesome besides that. :)

    @Thomas & @Sina702

I just checked my Vista Premium and I don’t have it so I assumed it was a vista ultimate “extra”.

  6. Sina702 says:

You may not have it because you have windows tablet PC optional components disabled. Go to windows programs and features, check it, and apply, and if you type snipping tool in the search box, you should have it. Good Luck :D

  7. Thomas says:

@Sina702: Excellent suggestion. This might really be the cause for Fire G. not having snipping tools enabled. Is not the power of community smth great? :)

  8. Fire G says:

@Sina702: Your right, I turned that off a bit ago. I guess I’ll go turn it back on! XD
