Installing Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) KB948465

step5

Well the latest build of the vista SP2 (build number 6002.16497) is out, I know that a lot of you will be wanting to upgrade and some of you might be scared that it may ruin system stability (and with the history of Microsoft Betas, your fears are justifiable) but do not worry as I have tried it and it installs fine. SO I decided to make a small guide on how to install it without getting into a trouble spot.

Before even thinking of adding the registry patch using our script (see below), backup your System Drive (in most cases the C: drive) first.

The New Features

In addition to previously released updates since the launch of Windows Vista SP1, Windows Vista SP2 contains changes focused on supporting new types of hardware and adding support for several emerging standards:

  • Windows Vista SP2 adds Windows Search 4.0 for faster and improved relevancy in searches.
  • Windows Vista SP2 contains the Bluetooth 2.1 Feature Pack supporting the most recent specification for Bluetooth Technology.
  • Ability to record data on to Blu-Ray media natively in Windows Vista.
  • Adds Windows Connect Now (WCN) to simplify Wi-Fi Configuration.
  • Windows Vista SP2 enables the exFAT file system to support UTC timestamps, which allows correct file synchronization across time zones.

How do you get it?

Well there is no direct download available, therefore you can get our SP2 download script, and download it via Windows Update. It?s as simple as that.

Errors which might come up

The main error I encountered was was error ?CODE 80072EE2?

error1

This is usually caused by the firewall according to the Microsoft help manual, therefore disable the firewall before checking for updates. This worked for me.

Updates you have to install first

step2

The main update you might need to install before installing Vista SP2 would be ?Vista SP2 Servicing Stack Update Build 16497 for x86 (KB955430)? Install it and try windows update again and this time you will see the SP2 update being available to you.

SP2 Alas

step3 step4

Before installing any major update pack, there is a general rule-of-thumb, that is to disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware.

Now you just have to wait till windows update finishes downloading and installing SP2.

step6 final

after installing, if you reboot and check your system properties, you can see the new Service Pack 2 and Version Number (v. 113) and you Windows build would have changed to 6002.

properties about

If you encounter any errors, post in comments. I will try my best to resolve them.

Please Note:

  1. You might have to reinstall .Net Framework 3.5. Get it Here
  2. After reboot, you will see the SP2 build 6002 watermark. Use this tutorial to remove it (yes this works on sp2 as well).

@Julie:

Try any of the solutions given here..One of them should work

[Easy Solution]
First of all before trying this it is better if you download a standalone copy Vista SP2 and try to install that.(you can find the latest SP2 in this post: http://dotnetwizard.net/vista-stuff/vista-service-pack-2-released/)

ok now if that didn’t work out check below :?

[Not so easy time consuming solution]
1. Check if the following services are running in your system. If not set them to “auto” and start them
# Background Intelligent Transfer Service(BITS) [Set to Auto/delayed start]
# Cryptographic Services [Automatic]
# Windows Update [Automatic/Delayed start]

Now try to update again. if it doesn’t
2. Uninstall any disk imaging tools (Daemon tools,Alchohol..etc)

Restart and try to update again..if it fails
3. Scan system files using SFC /SCANNOW in a command prompt

Restart PC and try to update. If its still not working move to the next step

4. Uninstall any antivirus, firewall applications installed.

Restart the machine and try to update..not working?..try step 5
5. Use System Restore to restore the PC to an earlier state where you did not have this error.

If step 5 is not available or doesn’t work for you, either do a repair installation* or reinstall the O/S

*to do a repair installation see this article

Thank you blacknoise for your reply and advice.

I have tried downloading the update directly and running it and still got the same error. I disabled all of my security program and firewall and still didnt work. I ran the System Update Readiness Tool (KB947821) as recommended by windows…nothing.
I dont have any disk imaging tools installed apart from nero which is disabled. The odd thing is that I am able 2 get and install other updates ok eg. Updates for IE 8 Compatibility View List(KB971180.
My system has been running fine apart from this so dont know whats going on? Very frustrating.

I am not very knowledged or confident around computers so am unsure of how to try some of your other points. Could you please explain how to do step 1? Appreciate your help.

@julie:

How to do step one:
1. Click the start button
2. In the “search programs and files” field type services.msc and press enter.
.
.
Now the Services window will popup, search for the services i have given (the services list is in alphabetical order so its easy to find)
.
.
How to run System File Checker
1. Click the start button, in the search area type cmd.
2. Now the CMD.exe will be shown as the search result. Rhight click it and select “Run as Administrator”
3. In the Command prompt that opened just now, type SFC /SCANNOW and press enter.
4. Now windows will check if there are any errors in your system files and attempt to fix them.(you will need the Vista DVD)
.
.
.
Finally How to do a repair install:
1. Insert the Vista Installation DVD into the DVD/ROM
2. When the Autorun starts click “Install Now”
3. Click “Go online to obtain the latest updates for installation”
4. Enter your Key if needed.
5. In the screen where you select the installation type select “Upgrade”
IMPORTANT: Upgrading is actually a repair install. It will not delete your files but backup anyway. The Upgrading will take more time than a normal installation. Also for an error free repair make sure disk imaging tools, AV and Firewalls are not installed in your system.(in some cases repair failed as these programs were conflicting with the installation)

……………………………..
If any of these doesn’t solve your issue then you will have to do a clean Installation. Its better to find someone with the knowledge to do that and let that person fix your PC.(Yes Vista can be a real pain sometimes :? )

Check if Background Intelligent Transfer Service(BITS)is running. If not start it.

You are also having one of those really dreadful update errors :| :|

Use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

see my comments and try some of them out. (finally try the “In-place upgrade”)

@john:

It is hard to say what your problem is without knowing the error you get. I have given all the details on how to troubleshoot SP2 installation errors in earlier comments… have you tried them?
>
>
There’s also a possibility of these kinds of issues if you use dual boot.
>
>
Finally if there’s no solution you will either have to tell us exactly what the error is or backup your data and do a repair install prior to installing Vista SP2 or do a clean Vista install
>
>
P.S you could also try using windows update for other hotfixes, and then try installing SP2..(not sure this will work though)
>
>
Second Question: At the moment you can get away without installing it but in another couple of months of time for some new updates and softwares SP2 will be a prerequisite installation.

@john:

It seems that some of the files that gets replaced by SP2 are corrupted. You can fix these by using SFC /SCANNOW and chkdsk /f X: where X is your system drive (by default its C). After that you can install SP2.
.
By any chance if the above method does not work then the only other solution is to do a repair install. This “repair install” is basically an installation over the current installed O/S where all the system files get replaced while your files are intact.

1. Open a Command prompt (this can be done by typing cmd in the search area of the start menu)
2. Type SFC /SCANNOW and press enter.

That’s all, now you will have to wait till the scan finishes..if there is a corrupted file you are going to need a vista dvd to replace it

I have tried installing SP2 using window’s update. disabled McAfee and all other programs. Window’s update downloads and then says it is installing. Says it has successfully installed and asks to restart. When I restart, it goes to a screen saying “configuring updates “step 1 of 3″ or something like that. The percentage complete never moves off of zero percent. Then the system restarts, comes back up with the same message “configuring updates” After a minute or two, it comes up with a message that says that the service pack did not install. Then it says it is reverting. Takes a few more minutes and finishes booting up without installing SP2.

Any help in figuring out what is keeping the install from completing would be great.

HI Blacknoise. Thanks for the help. Unfortunately, nothing short of reinstalling the system seems to be working, so that’s the point I’m at. However, I’m not sure how (or if I can) do the repair install, as opposed to a clean install. I’ve got an HP Pavilion system. I have a set of recovery disks that I was told to create when the computer was new. But my understanding of this is that it is a System Recovery which will set everything back to factory specs, including deleting all my files. That may be where I’m headed anyway but I wanted to see if I could repair the current install of the OS. Just not sure if I can with this system. Any suggestions?

Thanks

that’s the procedure, but since your PC is HP, you will have use the recovery disk or similar to reset(its basically the same). But you could backup your data to another drive(any drive except the one where windows is installed), copy your data to an external device or burn them to dvd’s although I believe HP has an option to reset the O.S while saving your existing data

Goodluck

Thanks. I already have all my data backed up so I may end up wiping the whole thing clean, though I’d wanted to try to avoid that.

There are a couple of other strange behavior’s though that may argue for a clean reinstall. First, I’ve noticed that in my “Documents” folder I am getting a bunch of folders appearing with titles that kind of look like registry keys of some kind. They are sets of {} with a bunch of letters/numbers and dashes. i.e. {b7ejo43-gh34rh} that kind of thing, but longer. What is strange is that new ones are appearing regularly, with current dates, although sometiems there are several with the same date, and sometimes there aren’t any for a week. It is like some setting got changes to tell the system to start writing to the Documents folder, but I have no idea what this stuff is.

The other strange behavior is that my DVD writer now thinks it is just a CD-writer. It reads/writes CDs fine but doesn’t recognize DVDs at all. Thought maybe it was going bad so bought a new one. Same problem. So it seems that the problem is with the system, not the writer.

Just wondering if you’ve got any idea what could be causing any of this and what to do. My gut tells me a reinstall is what’s needed, but checking for a 2nd opinion.

Well that is what i was going to suggest you in the first place coz a reinstall would be nice install with a dvd which has sp2 integrated and then immediately after install install sp2. then i would advise you to back up the system using a backup software like acronis true image or norton ghost. then proceed with ur other installations.
Hope this helps.
PS:The issue you are having is the same problem i got also, this happens randomly i really could not find what caused it.

I have Vista Ultimate and the SP2 as part of Windows Updates got to Stage 3 92% and then hangs. It eventually times out and goes to a loging with the error “The System Event Notification Service service failed the logon. No more threads can be created in the system.”

It then reboots on its own and eventually logs in. Then, it unexpectedly (after about 15 mins) logged out and stated that the service pack failed to install and said it was reverting! It took a couple of hours of rebooting and the same System Event Notification error on logon message several times until it finally logged in about five minutes ago. Now what??? Holy Moly!

@Jesse:

do you have any services disabled? or have you modified any system files?
Looks like some of the files that should be replaced are corrupted or somehow cant be overwritten.
Try the usual remedies mentioned in the comments(disabling 3rd party start-up,anti-virus,firewall etc..)

also check if System Event Notification Service is not disabled

Anyway now that its screwed up you can try to use system restore.
If by any chance you do not have a restore point you have two options
1. Backup your files and do a clean install
2. Install vista over the current and reinstall SP2

installing service pack 2 but it hangs at the 1 of 3 -17% and just sits there… forever…

i want to disable the antivirus.. but every time i restart or even try to recover it just boots as normal and then contiues to hang at 17%

the recover disk dosn’t seem to be able to do much… system restore also is of no help…

If I do a system restore I lose stuff is that right? I bought a WD external hard drive and it doesn’t seem to synch properly with my pc and whatever I try with that I can’t get it to get all my stuff off…

right now the best solution is to
1. Back up your personal data
2. Format system partition
3. Re install Vista
4. Install the Service pack (windows update or standalone)

believe me if you have done all the mentioned fixes this is the best solution
