Guide to downloading torrents & uTorrent speed tips

Posted by Joel 7 October, 2008 (14) Comment

Torrents are the best way to share files as they do not load up the servers, since everybody who is downloading contributes to the sharing, torrents are the future of P2P. P2P is a wonderful new technology, mainly because it uses decentralized file transfers, that means every client connected in the network acts as a server as well as a client. There is no Server-Client issues and rarely any load issues.

The best softwares to download files shared in the form of torrents are called torrent clients. There are many torrent clients available like uTorrent, Azureus, BitComet, etc., but when compared with ease of use and memory usage uTorrent is the best out there.

Best Facebook Greasemonkey Scripts

Posted by Joel 20 April, 2008 (7) Comment

Recently (3-4 months ago) I started using the biggest social networking site on the world Facebook. I joined there because most of my friends and college class mates were there. After joining and being active for some time and after a while, when your friends list grows for more than 100 or so you get bombarded with invitations of useless applications, quizzes, games and other stuff. Although I like some Facebook apps such as birthday notifier, most of them (90-95%) are useless.

So here are some scripts known as Greasemonkey scripts which will work with Firefox 2 and Firefox 3, and make your Facebook experience much nicer than before and also will save you loads of time.

Better Skype Embedding

Posted by Joel 11 April, 2008 (3) Comment

These days embedding a Skype button on sites has become very popular, although there are lot of ways and methods, but I found out a better way to embed them and tweaked the code a little bit so that it will be more compatible (would love to hear your feedback).

First of all you can choose which button you want to put up in your site by going here, and if you want to create a custom button you can create it by using the Skype wizard found here.

Speed up your Windows Vista Shutdown Process

Posted by Joel 28 March, 2008 (0) Comment

You can try speeding up Windows Vista Shutdown process whenever the system is waiting to kill a process. The steps are as follows:

1. Open regedit.exe
2. Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control]
3. Change the value of ?WaitToKillServiceTimeout? to 1000

But as a reminder, do this at your own risk as sometimes the system really needs to wait for a process to finish. Probably bringing it down to just 10000 would be safe enough

Add Copy To entry to right-click menu

Posted by Joel 22 February, 2008 (5) Comment

In windows when you right-click, there is an option called Send-to. Which is not that useful but most people use it. It has only the options to send to a zipfile, My Documents, Desktop and several generic places like the My Briefcase…. Unfortunately most users find this quite useless.

Therefore most users want to copy files to locations they want with right-click. This is disabled by Microsoft by default, and I have no idea why, but here is how to enable it and make life more easier.

For this you need to add a registry key. Its simple as that.

How to split a Large non-stop mix MP3 file into individual tracks using .cue files

Posted by Joel 22 February, 2008 (6) Comment

Recently I had a lot of trouble trying to split large non-stop re-mix cds into smaller individual mp3 tracks. I did a search around the internet and there were some utilities available for free, but they had some problems.

Usually most of us use a free mp3 player called Foobar2000 to do this, but in vista this function in Foobar2000 does not work, and most of the plugins are bit complicated to use by the normal user. I found a nice free and simple utility to do this. Therefore I thought of writing this tutorial so that everyone will not go through a hard time to do this.

Here are the steps

Before you start you should have a folder containing the non-stop mix along with the cue files in a folder like this…

Hide all System Tray Icons

Posted by Joel 20 February, 2008 (7) Comment

Some applications that are running in the background are displaying an icon in the Windows System Tray to give the user faster access to the program?s options. While this option is useful for some applications it does look kinda ugly especially if a lot of icons are visible in the system tray.

If you like a more beautiful appearance of Windows you could hide all system tray icons. The programs would still be running in the background but the icons would not be visible anymore. It?s possible to hide the icons using a Registry setting. Press Windows R, type regedit and hit enter.

The Fastest Way to Search Files in Vista

Posted by Joel 18 February, 2008 (0) Comment

Locate is one of the fastest ways to search for files and content in files in Windows. It uses a file database which is created once at first run and then updated regularly to reflect the changes to the system. The initial scan takes a few minutes while the updates usually finish in a matter of seconds.

The softwaredeveloper is constantly working on Locate and he has added several new functions. The biggest change in this new version of Locate is the Find as you type function. Locate does not wait anymore until the user presses the submit button to find files or text in files but presents results immediately.

Create PDF Documents From Any Other Documents in Your PC

Posted by Joel 18 February, 2008 (4) Comment

We regularly have to create loads of PDF files, maybe for portability and to transfer easily to other people or even to share with other people conveniently.

All this time the only pdf creator was Adobe Acrobat Writer which was not only expensive but also huge and took a lot of hard disk space. So the people who cannot afford such prices were left in the mercy of online PDF creation websites, where you have to create your PDF document by uploading your document and wait for some time after which the converted document will be emailed to you.

But most people did not like the idea of submitting their important confidential files and email addresses to a websites due to privacy reasons.
