Hackers target Xbox Live players

xbox360balllogolarge

Xbox Live is being targeted by malicious hackers selling services that kick players off the network.

The booting services are proving popular with players who want a way to get revenge on those who beat them in an Xbox Live game.

The attackers are employing data flooding tools that have been used against websites for many years.

Microsoft is "investigating" the use of the tools and said those caught using them would be banned from Xbox Live.

"There’s been a definite increase in the amount of people talking about and distributing these things over the last three to four weeks," said Chris Boyd, director of malware research at Facetime Communications.

What You Should Expect from the Windows 7 Beta

Posted by Marik 11 January, 2009 (7) Comment

If you haven’t already heard, the Windows 7 Public Beta is going to be released today through the Microsoft website, and the first 2.5 million people to register with Microsoft will receive access to the Beta 1 version. Today we’ll run through the features and what you should expect.

I’ve been using the beta for a couple of weeks, and yesterday I got my hands on the official Beta 1 release, which is good enough to use on a regular basis if it wasn’t for the hard cut-off date… yes, the beta release has an expiration date on August 1st 2009, after which it will stop working.

Yes sir, the long awaited Windows 7 public beta download links are here.

So fire up your engines and start downloading. Remember the initial install only lasts for 30 days, but you can always extend it’s period by attaining the serial from Microsoft which is also free.

This extends it’s life to August 1st, so if you never got the chance to experience the wonders of Windows 7, now would be the time. (You can also disable the days limit with an activator….google is your friend)

Google Mail: Google’s approach to email

Posted by Marik 15 December, 2008 (2) Comment

What we have been working on:

New in Labs: Tasks, Text Messaging in Chat:
  • Tasks: Keep track what you need to do with a lightweight task list right inside of Google Mail. Just click and type to add new tasks, convert emails into tasks, and (most satisfyingly) check them off as you’re done. Once you turn on this Labs feature, look for the Tasks link to the left of your inbox under Contacts
  • Text messaging in Chat: Send SMS text messages right from Google Mail. You chat from your comfy computer and reach your friends on the go; they get your messages as texts and can peck out replies on their little keyboards

Windows 7 Preview Part 2: Desktop Enhancements

Posted by Marik 4 November, 2008 (10) Comment

Heading into PDC 2008, where Microsoft finally unveiled Windows 7, the big excitement revolved around what exactly the software giant would deliver to testers. And yet, now that I know the answer to that question, it’s a bit hard to describe. That’s because there are two versions of the so-called milestone 3, or M3, build that Microsoft is showing off at PDC. There’s the version we’ve gotten and the version they’re demoing. And they’re not exactly the same.

The more advanced version–the one we didn’t get–includes three pretty major and attractive features (the enhanced Windows Taskbar, Jump Lists, and Windows Aero Desktop Enhancements)–all of which I’ll still describe below. The version we did get looks a bit more like Windows Vista than what I’m calling the Microsoft version. And that’s OK, of course, but it kinds of dulls the experience because the Microsoft version of M3 is pretty darned cool. I’m told we’ll finally get all that extra stuff by Beta 1.

Windows 7 Preview Part 1: Let’s Just Pretend Vista Never Happened, Shall We?

Posted by Marik 4 November, 2008 (1) Comment

Well, let me ruin the surprise up front. Windows 7 is Windows Vista done right. If you’re already a fan of Windows Vista, you’ll love Windows 7 because it’s a better rendition of that earlier OS. If you’re a Vista hater, take heart: The makers of Windows 7 have reevaluated virtually everything about Vista and made changes small and large across the board. The result is a better Windows, no matter how you slice it.
