Add Copy To entry to right-click menu

Posted by Joel 22 February, 2008 (5) Comment

In windows when you right-click, there is an option called Send-to. Which is not that useful but most people use it. It has only the options to send to a zipfile, My Documents, Desktop and several generic places like the My Briefcase…. Unfortunately most users find this quite useless.

rclick1.jpg

Therefore most users want to copy files to locations they want with right-click. This is disabled by Microsoft by default, and I have no idea why, but here is how to enable it and make life more easier.

For this you need to add a registry key. Its simple as that.

Enable Transfer of MP3 files through Microsoft Windows Live Messenger

Posted by Joel 3 February, 2008 (1) Comment

As you all know windows live messenger is the most popular and the most feature rich messenger in the whole planet. Thus WLM has become the most used mesenger.

Out of the many features included in the messenger one security feature is the protection from receiving files with unsafe extensions.

Therefore, whenever you try to send or receive a file that has the file extension from the following list, Messenger assumes is potentially unsafe file and thus banned.
By default, Messenger blocks files that have the following file extensions:

.ade .adp .app .asp .bas .bat .cer .chm .cmd .com .cpl .crt .csh .exe .fxp .hlp
.hta .inf .ins .isp .its .js .jse .ksh .lnk .mad .maf .mag .mam .maq .mar .mas
.mau .mav .maw .mda .mdb .mde .mdt .mdw .mdz .msc .msi .msp .mst .ops
.pcd .pif .pl .prf .prg .pst .reg .scf .scr .sct .shb .shs .tmp .url .vbs .vsd .vb
.vsmacros .vss .vst .vsw .ws .wsc .wsf .wsh .mat .vbe

recently I found out that WLM also blocks the transfer of .MP3, this is bit annoying in the same time bit frustrating. We all know what MP3s are, and they are not harmful in anyway, and finding that Messenger blocks such files whereas it does NOT block other audio extensions is pretty annoying.

Open Hotmail with Firefox from Windows Live Messenger

Posted by Joel 28 January, 2008 (53) Comment

One of the biggest problems with Live messenger is it automatically assumes that you like Internet Explorer to view hotmail or any other live mail accounts. This is so wrong because most of us use FireFox as our default browsers. So it’s a bit annoying when clicking on the email button in messenger directly opens IE and starts loading hotmail.

So here is a nice utility which allows you to customize in which browser you want to open your hotmail page

ffdefault.jpg

even if you set firefox as the default browser, only the links get open. The email button always opens IE to load your hotmail. This is ok if you use IE7 with IE7 pro , and a disaster if you are still using IE6 in older OS, or if you prefer opening hotmail in FireFox.
