Stardock Fences is a desktop enhancement program that creates semitransparent floating groups of boxes in which you can add your icons into. It also has the feature of hiding these boxes or selected ones by double clicking on an empty area. This makes the desktop more organized and clean. Also these boxes can be resized, locked or moved to any position on your desktop and one of the most important features is that the auto scroll bar feature so a lot of icon could be added to a small sized box.(this is very useful for small screens)

Finally I have to say its a free program but its still in the beta stages and will be expiring in August 2009. Don’t worry there will be a final version before that. Even if it is a beta its very good. The good points are that it does not have a separate process(at least I did not see one) so it uses a tiny amount of resources and there is no startup lag either. also it has a snapshot feature to backup your earlier desktop structure so you can revert to an earlier state or the state the desktop was in before fences was installed if you want to uninstall.

Currently its installed on Vista and Windows 7 and there weren’t any errors up-to-date. Uninstall feature works fine also, it doesn’t make screw-up the PC so overall its a fine piece of software.

I am using it and I do not see any fences process as well. Either it becomes part od explorer ( I have to shut down explorer to see if fences disapper-currently I cannot check) or acts as svchost.exe process.

It looks nice.

CONFIRMATION.
It is part of explorer, that’s why it does not have it’s own process.
I hope author will polish “fences” as they are part of explorer, and if you modify explorer, you take a lot of chance to make it unstable.
So if you are one who is using beta fences and see sudden explorer crashes, try to uninstall this app and see if it solves anything.

I have this program and it does create a folder called Desktop0, Desktop1 and so on. It does also lag for me and I have Windows 7 as well.
