Enable/Disable Live Messenger 2009 Photo sharing

Photosharing enabled Photosharing disabled

Photo sharing was added to WLM 2009 wave 3 onwards. What this feature does is it starts photo sharing automatically when an image is dragged into the messenger window.(pretty cool at the start). What’s bad about it is that if you need to send an image photo sharing is enabled and it takes up your space in WLM window making chatting a nightmare.

So how do we disable Photosharing?

There are two ways this can be done…

1. Patching msnmsgr.exe using a HEX editor

2. Using a 3rd party plug-in for Messenger Plus Live

while the first option removes photosharing permanently the second one gives you the option to change it when you want.

1. Hex Edit Method

Use a HEX editor and find the offset 16392F and change the conditional jump byte 74 (je) to EB (unconditional jump). Save your work, now WLM photo sharing will be disabled. This method works only for WLM version 14.0.8064.206

2. Photosharing Disabler Plugin for Messenger Plus Live

Download Photosharing Disabler and import it. Then choose it from the scripts list and either select enable or disable. (you need Messenger Plus Live for this to work)

Thank you for this! This feature is so annoying it gets me mad every time I drag a file and it opens photo sharing. I read it is very possible they will be adding an option to disable it on future builds of WLM.

By the way, I tried the script for Messenger Plus! and it didn’t work :(
