Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) has been released to the public through Windows Update and Microsoft Download Center, after a slight delay due to incompatibility issue.
Now the official release is out.
Microsoft names the standalone installation package for SP3 as Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers and intends for who are downloading and installing on multiple computers on a network. Well! I downloaded the xpsp3 twice, one from microsoft directly and the other from a torrent.
Checksum of xpsp3 iso downloaded via MS site:
MD5: 21F4EBBBCB784012695E17D4D5675F84
SHA1: 06AEFA84DF8CE89F512EF07374E0E61BCE0981C8
CRC32: F3A67709
Checksum of Xpsp3 iso downloaded via torrent:
MD5: 308245853E5B231343EE17B36FFDA1E6
SHA1: 8FA76CCEA145D050FC6A506FFBDEDFE53282E5B4
CRC32: FFFFFFFF
I think the xpsp3 iso checksum of the torrent is correct as I doubt the file downloaded directly from MS got corrupted (bcoz of multiple connections).
Hope it helps!

Hi,
I confirm the md5sum for the .iso:
308245853e5b231343ee17b36ffda1e6 xpsp3_5512.080413-2113_usa_x86fre_spcd.iso
Cheers

Hi again,
I forgot to say that this is the md5 sum after downloading direct from Microsoft, and is not a torrent download. I got the .iso from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2fcde6ce-b5fb-4488-8c50-fe22559d164e&displaylang=en
And to reconfirm the md5:
308245853e5b231343ee17b36ffda1e6 xpsp3_5512.080413-2113_usa_x86fre_spcd.iso
I downloaded the .iso onto a Linux PC, where I computed the md5sum.

So… if one downloads the update package and extracts the files to create a CD that can be run without going through the extraction process each time, does anyone know which executable to run to start the update? There’s no “install.exe” or “setup.exe” (or *.inf) that looks obvious…
on May 17, 2008
Nevermind… Duuhhhh…
Run \i386\update\update.exe….

Why isn’t your website secure? It is listed as http://. Should be https://
on May 18, 2008
well to make it secure, we need an SSL certificate. If you could kindly donate the money for an SSL certificate I will be happy to implement it. This is a non-profit site and we do not require an SSL certificate (no risky or sensitive transactions occurring) so we do not have an SSL certificate.

i have sp3 rc1 installed ver.3311 this version seems to be 5512 so will this conflict with the older one?
on July 1, 2008
well technically according to Microsoft it should update to the newest build, but I would ask you to uninstall the older build and install a newer build. If you are scared of screwing up your system take a full backup of your C drive (OS drive) and do the upgrade/uninstall, use backup tools like Acronis true image or Nero back it up or even Norton ghost. Good Luck.

I installed windows xp sp3 and my computer started running better. Faster start-up, faster shutdowns and responds much faster to commands. I’m not sure about buring the download to disk but I put it on a flashdrive with no problems for later if i need to reinstall my OS.

After windows xp sp3 download unabe to access msn explorer. No problems before download. “Not able to sign you in. May be a problem with our service or your internet connection. Please try later.”
Funny, every thing worked good before download. Who has problen, other than me?

I’ve tried to download XP SP3 three times, it gets about 2/3 to 3/4 done and my Spysweeper alert and a window saying access denied pops up, then I’m asked to uninstall the SP3. I also, can no longer access my hotmail from the MSN page while using Mozilla Firefox, but I can if I use Internet Explorer. Do I need to turn my Spysweeper off?
on September 15, 2008
****A Rule of Thumb: turn off all your antivirus and antispy when you install any service packs. And SP3 is really nice makes the OS much stable.
on September 15, 2008
Yep, I got the same problem, whats the solution anyone???
on October 25, 2008
I have no idea man, as I do not use MSN explorer and maybe its something to do with your ISP try calling them and talking to them with this problem. Others might have done it already so you are most likely to get a solution for your problems.
on October 25, 2008
Hi, I’ve downloaded the SP3 but it will not allow me to install. After extraction It gives an error message: “Service Pack 3 Setup cannot update a checked (debug) system with a free (retail) version of Service Pack 3, or vice versa.”
can anyone help?
on December 9, 2008
The reason behind this problem is that the update package installs retail bits on retail builds and checked bits on checked builds. But you can spoof Windows updates in order to install retail bits on checked builds and vice versa.
If you are also facing the same problem, then follow these simple steps and your problem should be solved:
1. Open regedit and goto:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
2. In right-side pane look for a String value “CurrentType”. Change its value to Checked and if its already set to Checked, then set it to Free and click on OK.
3. Exit registry editor and try to install SP3 again. Now it should install without any problem.
