When you download iTunes, it has a whole bundle of softwares with it. iTunes is one of the best music management softwares out there with superb album management coupled with album art browsing and some nice trendy features. It will be more useful for people who use ipods and like to sync their ipod with the PC.

Unfortunately most people do not like QuickTime an Apple audio playback and encoding plugin. Instead most use QuickTime Lite or QuickTime Alternative.

So here is a tip to install iTunes without QuickTime.

  1. Download and install QuickTime alternative if you haven’t already got it. If you have it already skip this step.
  2. Download iTunes installer.
  3. Unzip iTunes installer with WinRAR.
  4. Inside you will find five .msi files such as, AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi, AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi, iTunes.msi, iTunesSetupAdmin.msi and QuickTime.msi, DELETE QuickTime.msi.
  5. Open command prompt in admin privilages (in Vista) and navigate in command prompt to the unzipped folder, and type the following command :
    msiexec.exe /i iTunes.msi /quiet
  6. Thats all enjoy iTunes without the added hassles of QuickTime.

This is VERY useful! I really can’t stand the bloat of additional processes bundled with all great Apple softwares for Windows.

Hi there, I’m getting this error message when I try to input the command:
“This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists & that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package.”

How could I fix this?

Ok Karen did u install QuickTime alternative? If you did not do this you will receive this message. please check again. Quicktime alternative is a slim version without added running processes a very good quicktime plugin which does not hog resources.

I got the same message all of a sudden. I tried to repair Quicktime as the message suggested but no dice. I have downloaded QuickTime alternative and am ready to go. Will I have to uninstall my present copy of itunes before I use the procedure above? I have many itunes songs I bought from them. If I do this procedure, will I lose all the songs I purchased? :?:

Sorry katie, it was fixed on the following versions after that on which i made the tutorial. maybe apple deliberately wants to keep iTunes a bloatware. Sorry :(

Cool, but the people in apple have figured this out (guess they found out frm here :) ) they have made it to crash if u used this method, maybe they want to make iTunes a bloatware deliberately.

I can’t get this to work. Winrar does not let me delete the quicktime file and I cannot get into the folder any other way. As far as the command prompt line- I don’t have Vista- I have XP. Is there some other way?

Any idea on if this is still working with the latest itunes? or of other alternatives?

I cannot even get it to install – I get the same :

This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists & that you can
access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer
package.

Thanks,

Flaviss

it works with 8.0.2.20. Just extract the iTunesSetup.exe using winrar and you will get 7 *.MSI packages:

AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi
AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi
Bonjour.msi
iTunes.msi
MobileMe.msi
QuickTime.msi
SetupAdmin.exe

you need to install all except the last two(earlier versions didn’t have this issue)

If you want itunes but not quicktime the best way to do that is to install itunes with quicktime, uninstall quicktime and install “QuickTime Alternative”.

I think that it would be very helpful to say that the “/quiet” option will reboot your machine without asking. Just in case someone starts doing this in the middle of something important.
Otherwise the instruction worked great.
Thank you.

iTunes blows. It’s bloated crapware that eats resources. I would much rather just install Quicktime and stick with WinAMP, thankyouverymuch

This is really really useful!
Works in 15 minutes whereas trying to install the official Apple Quicktime did not work in 4 hours…
