If you use Windows 7 RC you have probably noticed that win 7 keeps a list of the recently used search terms in the search area in the upper right hand corner. Now for some reason if you want to remove these items from the history use any of the 3 methods given below.

searchmru-1

First is the easiest.. all you have to do is simply highlight the search term you want to delete and press the delete key.

Second method: download the given file extract the .reg file (windows7-clearsearchmru.reg) and excecute it to delete all MRU search items.

Download: windows7-clearsearchmru.zip

Third method: This is the same as above except you just have to do it manually.

a.  Click search and type regedit and press enter

b. Browse to the following registry entry and delete whatever is under the “WordWheelQuery” entry.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\WordWheelQuery

searchmru-2

Now if you want to permanantly disable Search MRU list,

1. Click start and in the search area type gpedit.msc

2. Now the group policy editor will open. In it go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates>Windows Components>Windows Explorer

3. In the settings panel under Windows Explorer look for Turn off display of recent search entries in the Windows Explorer search box

4. Right click it and select edit

Use not configured or disabled to keep search history enabled.

Use Enable to disable the search history

grouppolicy_turnoffsearchhistory

If you cannot use the group policy editor use the below reg file to disable search history

Disable_search_MRU_list.zip

if you wish to enable it use this file: Enable_search_MRU_list.zip

(unzip and double click to use the above files)
