PeerBlock goes out of beta
The excellent piece of software PeerBlock, that came as an alternative to PeerGuardian is finally out of the beta stage. The 1.0 final version is available from the PeerBlock website. Since I have told you most about what PeerBlock is and its functionality, here I will only mention the changes and new features of the final version.
PeerBlock r162: Includes signed driver!
Earlier we posted about a Peerguardian alternative that works with Vista and Windows 7, well here it is again only this time its better than ever. PeerBlock succeeded what Peerguardian started years ago and now has a signed driver. So what does the signed driver do??.. What it does is now there won’t be anymore issues getting PeerBlock to work in Windows 7 and Vista x64 systems. This version of PeerBlock named r162 as an “Interim Release” is probably going to be the last RC version as the next is going to be the final. Also it has to be mentioned that r162 has lots of bugfixes(according to its developers all the “show stopping bugs” have been fixed) and new features have been added.
The change log is pretty big so to put it in brief the main improvements are:
- Automatic Run As Admin in Win7 and Vista.
- Signed driver
- Switch to iblocklist lists
- Tweaked List Manager Interface
- Verification of Block lists after download
For the full list of changes see below or check out the PeerBlock Developer site.

Yahoo Messenger 10 Beta Direct Link
Yahoo Messenger 10.0.0.525 beta has been officially released. Now you can download it directly from yahoo instead of the leaked copy(version 10.0.0.331). Yahoo messenger 10 includes some feature improvements and added social network support. As for features these are the main it has to offer:
1. High quality video calls(HiDef): The video call feature has been redesigned to support high quality video streaming with synced audio. And the video call is made in the chat window to reduce space usage. Full screen support has also been added.
2. New Yahoo Insider page: The yahoo Insider page has a more “different” look rather than the dull page nobody liked. It does still have news feeds, weather and mailbox notification.
Fix: Unable to install Daemon tools on Windows 7
Daemon tools had issues with its SPTD driver installation in Windows 7 earlier builds. This was fixed up to an extent with their 4.30 Lite update that includes version 1.58 of the SPTD driver.
Currently the problem most people are facing with daemon tools is that after an upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 or from Windows 7 to another new build, completely breaks the Daemon tools installation. And what’s worse is that even if you try to re-install it will keep asking to reboot endlessly. Earlier I upgraded a Vista installation to Windows 7 and faced the same problem myself, after trying various methods I finally managed to (re)install Daemon tools properly.
According to the Daemon tools site you can try to use the SPTD driver installer to uninstall DT, but it didn’t work out at all. So here’s what you should do to get Daemon tools working.
Avast 5.0 Beta released
Avast 5.0 beta was released yesterday. This new version comes with a clean interface instead of the hard to operate media player type GUI it had. At the moment it has several limitations and bugs, so casual users stay away. If you want to just test it out go ahead.
A list of the current limitations can be found here.
