If you are in doubt, Windows 7 build 7100 is confirmed by Neowin as the RC build that will be released next month. I’d recommend you to stick with this RC build than other 71xx builds for stability reason. This may not be the latest but it is definitely the most stable one until Microsoft enter RTM phrase. Enjoy

Windows 7 SKUs confirmed by Paul Thurrott
Straight from Paul’s interview with Bill Veghte, Microsoft senior vice president, there will be 5 Windows 7 SKUs in total.
Starter, Home-Premium, Professional, Enterprise, and ultimately Ultimate.
Many comments from Engadget have been complains that Microsoft hasn’t learn from Vista. In fact, they did. Please read Paul’s article carefully to see how 7’s SKUs have been simplified a lot to ease consumers. The following is a summary to Paul’s article + some opinions of mine. Please be courteous.
Unlike Vista SKUs, 7’s SKUs will be offered differently in an effort to clear the confusion Vista SKUs caused to public.
The biggest change here is MS no long offer “Home Basic” edition that really serves no purpose at all in Vista’s SKUs anyway. However, Starter made a comeback. It is suggested that this edition will be offer to netbook to cut cost with limited features (Aero less, no home group, no media center etc.). Starter will not be offered through retail market.
Fortunately, consumer choices now narrow down literally 2 editions ( just like XP was). Unlike Vista, Business edition is not a superset of Home Premium since it has no entertainment features at all. Now, 7 Pro edition, a true superset, has all feature of HP with enhanced features like Domain join, Remote Desktop, Location aware printing, Presentation mode that are meant for Pro/Business user.
Ultimate will also be offer to consumer with a lot more extras. (Bitlocker, AppLocker, Direct Access, and the amazing feature of boot from VHD). This is purely for high earning professionals and super tech savvy consumers. Otherwise, I see no reason to get Ultimate since most average joe will need is entertainment features. period.
Enterprise edition is for ….. enterprise businesses. Only sold in bulk aka volume-license businesses only.
In summary of this summary, consumers will have a choice between 3 editions of 7. Home, Pro, or Ultimate. I personally see only two, home or pro. Since most PC will no doubt be shipped with Home P with exception of netbooks. Pro will be a nice upgrade if you need network/business features to work at home. Ultimate will rarely be offer on new PCs but will available for cash-burners.
Ultimately, the whole SKUs has been simplified almost as XP’s SKUs. I would go for Home Premium since I do not need any of those advanced features. I’m glad Microsoft is taking this approach to ease consumer’s needs. Bravo, first time since Windows XP, Microsoft finally sets things right with 7 and have me looking forward to purchase a copy for my netbook. (NC10 running 7 Beta Ultimate with no lag, can’t wait for final 7 Home Premium).

Windows 7 Tips and Product Keys
Tim from MSDN has posted what he called “The bumper list of Windows 7 Secrets,” containing a wealthy 30 secrets that Microsoft just reluctant to tell you which I think they should. Wouldn’t be nice if the first thing you see on your desktop is a demo in flash for the OS you’re using? A demo that gives you a list of fresh new features (secrets) that would make an average Joe excited about their new Operating System? There are excellent shortcuts that built-in to windows 7 but they are too hideous for Joe. Check it out by clicking the title above.
The latter is less important but you should have notice Microsoft was struggle with the high demand for Windows 7 Beta. As a result, Microsoft has since removed the policy of only 2.5M beta product keys but instead provide a list of 10 keys (unlimited activations) for the public.
However, Microsoft will close the public beta after Jan 24th meaning no more official links from MS for win 7. But no panic, these keys will stay active and 7 can be obtained easily from third channel (bt). I would save these for future betas / leaks.

Windows Live Essentials
As of yesterday, Microsoft has finalized Windows Live Essentials. This is a feature pack that supposed to enhance Windows 7 (Vista and XP are supported as well). My favorites are Live Messenger, Mail, Photo Gallery and Writer (I’m using Writer to write this post, very convenient indeed).
Windows Live Messenger was demoed at CES 2009 showing off a brand new feature called Dynamic Picture, as an replacement to traditional static profile picture. With Dynamic Picture, you can now record a short video clip to express yourself. Emotions are supported as well. I encourage you all to try it out yourself.
Side news: Windows 7 Beta will be available Jan 9th @ Microsoft. For those who already running Windows 7 build 7000, all you’ll need is the beta key.
Update: use A-patch to simplify the UI of Live Messenger further more. (Removing Ads and unnecessary stuff)
