Ex-Google engineers launch new search engine ?Cuil?, claims its the ?World?s Biggest Search Engine?

Posted by blacknoise 29 July, 2008 (3) Comment

cuil

Cuil, a new search engine, opened for business on Monday, boasting an index of 120 billion Web pages, “three times more than any other search engine.”

Google, as if pre-briefed on today’s announcement, on Friday said that its index had reached 1 trillion URLs, though not all of them lead to unique Web pages.

Founded by husband-and-wife team Tom Costello and Anna Patterson, a search-engine researcher from Stanford University and a Google technical lead, respectively, Cuil aims to rank the relevance of search results by content a nalysis rather than by popularity. It’s an obvious swipe at Google, which treats Web links as popular votes in weighing Web page relevance for a given query.

“Our team approaches search differently,” said Patterson, president and COO of Cuil, in a statement. “By leveraging our expertise in search architecture and relevance methods, we’ve built a more efficient yet richer search engine from the ground up. The Internet has grown and we think it’s time search did, too.”

Better Method to Fix File Being Deleted At Download Completion In Firefox 3

Posted by theWizard 29 July, 2008 (4) Comment

Some time ago I ran into a huge problem in Firefox 3. whenever I downloaded a file which was not supporting download acceleration and which was downloaded by Firefox is not being saved. I disappears forever after the download completion notification appears. Only a Firefox .part file remains. It also vanishes after you refresh the folder.

this was a huge problem and was getting on my nerves because I depend on Firefox for my daily activities. I even thought to switch to opera, but immediately understood that was even more problematic.

Finally I found a solution and posted on how to fix the issue, by using a plug-in. Thank you for all the users who reported on how successful this method worked.

I have found a better method, a method not involving a plug-in but adding a line to the Firefox configuration file which is much more efficient and easy.

Better Method (Here are the steps)

Yahoo Music to shut down

Posted by blacknoise 28 July, 2008 (1) Comment

yahoonrhapsody

Yahoo have announced that it is closing  down its Music service ?Yahoo Music? from September 30th this year.

Yahoo uses Digital Rights Management (DRM) to protect songs which requires song license to play it on any specific device. After Sep 30th, when Yahoo Music will not be available, users having music purchased from Yahoo will continue to play music on the devices they already have but they won?t be able to play their music on any other music player.

Yahoo is actually recommending its customers burn DRM-protected tracks to CD, then re-import them into their computers in an unprotected, DRM-free format. ?For any user who purchased tracks through Yahoo Music Unlimited, we highly recommend that you back up the purchased tracks to an audio CD before the closing of the Store on September 30, 2008,? the company wrote in an email message to customers. ?Backing up your music to an audio CD will allow you to copy the music back to your computer again if the license keys for your original music files cannot be retrieved.? The shutdown serves as another example of how digital rights management technology often interferes with customers? ability to use media they legitimately purchased.

Enable Spell Check for Input Fields in Firefox 3

Posted by Dzoni 28 July, 2008 (1) Comment

Firefox by default has a spell checker which underlines the misspelled words using a red line. This spell check is available only for text areas and not for text input fields like title for Wordpress blog post or a subject line for an e-mail etc. But you can enable spell check for text input fields as well. To do this, type about:config in address bar and press enter. Click on the button ?I?ll be Careful, I promise?. In the filter field in the config file type layout.spellcheckDefault.

The default value is 1, double click the entry and change the value to 2. click ok and close. You need to restart Firefox to see spell check enabled.

If spell check is still not enabled for input fields, then right click on the word and select Check Spelling option.

Microsoft DirectX 11 Details

Posted by blacknoise 25 July, 2008 (1) Comment

directX

Software giant Microsoft today revealed details concerning DirectX 11, the latest edition of its PC gaming graphics API.

Similar to DirectX 10, the software will be available only on Windows Vista and future versions of Microsoft’s operating system. DirectX 11 will add new compute shader technology that Microsoft says will allow GPUs to be used "for more than just 3D graphics," allowing developers to utilize video cards as parallel processors.

DirectX 11 will support tessellation, a feature which can potentially assist developers in making models appear smoother when seen up close. Multi-threaded resource handling is also incorporated, making it easier for games to utilize multi-core processors in a user’s machine.

Microsoft also disclosed that DirectX 11 will add features to existing DirectX 10-compatible hardware, though it was not immediately clear what those features may be.

A launch date for the new software was not provided, though Microsoft is expected to release more information in the near future. The bullet points, as provided by Microsoft, are listed below.
